DESIRE IS A FIRE THAT BURNS SLOW

My love is a mysterious sigh,
an ancient breath
seeking the whispering of silent spaces.
Born within time’s search for rhythm
I have become a chord for infinity’s choir,
strummed and plucked
by an unknown minstrel
playing on a stage made of dust.
You are a poem trapped in my throat,
the silky air of a flute’s desire,
paused until the tempo is in synch
to fill the air with a brief embrace.
Between expectant notes I wait,
floating on passion’s fanciful wings,
my fingertips feel a pulse
but my tongue is struck numb.
On the strings of a cello’s haunt I resonate,
a far off song for yearning hearts to sing,
and in the midnight blues that stare in the night
a saxophone plays a lonely tune.
Unspoken words swim within our gaze,
fluid impulses to a natural beat,
the pendulum swings to and fro
but our bodies remain still.
Where quivering lips forbid to speak
and hearts cloister their beats,
my tidal thoughts surge in cellular heat
to choreograph a pagan jig.
Beneath our masks,
beyond the nakedness,
we lay in the scent of fantasy’s flesh,
in silent knowing of what dreams can be
a symphony’s notes are undressed.
Crashing crescendos feather into misty vapour,
still waters may find a flow,
on glistening sands the moon barefacedly weeps
skipping into the distance of new lands.
On shores forlorn deep waters lap
a cantata from angels’ sleep,
from smouldering wants to feverish heights
desire is a fire that burns slow.
In your eyes where windows open
shadows of other worlds are kept,
in silent silhouettes they tease the truth unseen
where old loves are laid to rest
and broken hearts have wept.
In the corner of a twinkle therein
my reflection makes itself known
and I wonder how deep you need plunge into my eyes
before you see your own.
Hold my eyes steadfastly,
draw me ever near and kiss me sweetly,
free this poem from my throaty prison
so the world can hear our whispering hymns,
our ancient breaths echoing across infinity’s reach.
