Artist's Description

Right in the Centre
Living in The Hague has its benefits. There is this lovely pond, called ‘De Hofvijver’ (The Court’s Pond) right in the centre of the city. In spite of modernization The Hague still oozes out the atmosphere of a village. In fact it never get a so-called ‘city charter’ so technically it still is not a city. This village atmosphere refers to the centre of course and I can imagine foreigners would be suprized about its compact size. Nevertheless, there it is: a beautiful pond that reflects light like a diamond in the summertime.

Wandering about
Obviously I am to be found outdoors sketching when the weather is fine and one does not freeze to death. So there I was, sitting in front of the fountain in the middle of the pond and I was fascinated by the water evaporating as it was squirted up and came down. Next to this I was intrigued by the fountain seeming to pour out light. This and the light reflections on the water set my hand to sketch eventually.

80% Finished at the Spot
I tried to capture the scene with my hatched strokes technique and I think I managed in doing so. It was not easy. Therefor appromixately 80% of the drawing was done at the very spot. I took a photo, because artists nowadays have to luxury to process images in their studio after studying them live. There I finished the fountain with some erasing to-and-fro. Enought to get the impression right. As such it has become a total different view on De Hofvijver compared to my previous and first graphite pencil drawing of ‘De Hofvijver – 09-03-14’. That is what I like about creating art. The same motif can offer totally different views dependant on one’s mood, perspective and moment in time.

Graphite pencil drawing (Pentel 0.5 mm, 3B) on Winsor & Newton paper (14.8 × 21 × 0.1 cm – A5 format)
