Artist's Description

The Rayburn House Office Building is one of eight congressional office buildings that are part of the United States Capitol complex in Washington, DC. The Rayburn Building is named for former Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn, and opened in 1965. With nearly 2.4 million square feet, it is the largest congressional building and is where 169 Representatives have their offices (the total number of House members is 435). It is located on Constitution Avenue on the southwest side of the Capitol building.

The seven other congressional office buildings are the Russell, Dirksen and Hart buildings for the Senate, and the Cannon, Longworth, O’Neill and Ford buildings for the House. With the exception of O’Neill and Ford, all other office buildings are on streets that border the Capitol building, and all buildings are connected by an underground subway system.
