Artist's Description

I grew up a few miles from Mexicali, Mexico, in El Centro, California. My father took his three boys down into Mexicali every chance he had; he would pay a barber a quarter for our haircuts, and there were other cheap amenities down there as well. But the main reason my dad took us to Mexicali a lot was because we were three rather spoiled boys living comfortably in middle-class America, just a few miles from where a lot of people lived in cardboard houses, where children begged in the streets, or would sell candy or other small items to get whatever money they could for their families. All these years later when I go to California to visit my parents, I spend most of my days down in Mexicali, paying anyone a dollar to take their picture. I photographed this man early one morning as the smog still laid heavily on the streets of Mexicali.

Photograph taken 12 years ago in Mexicali, Mexico with my old but beloved Ricoh 35mm camera.
