Artist's Description

*Nature’s Bells ring out in celebration; Happy New Year!
These little white bells grow out of the ground in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.

Indian Pipe(Monotrope uniflora)*
This interesting looking plant is actually a flower and not a fungus. The plant gets its energy through fungal connections from its roots and those of nearby trees. It has no need for leaves and chlorophyll, the green matter that allows plants to capture energy from the sun. Other names for this plant are, Ghost flower, Ice plant,Corpse plant, Fairy-smoke, and Convulsion root.
Historically the Indian Pipe was used as a treatment for epileptic seizures and was used by Aboriginal people to soothe and heal sore eyes.
