Artist's Description

McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II – Serial Number 155529. This aircraft is displayed at The American Air Museum, part of the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, Cambridgeshire. First flown on 9th February 1968, it is displayed in the colours of VF74 of the US Navy. The aircraft saw action over Vietnam in 1972 flying from the USS America.

It was later to fly as ZE359 with 74 sqn of the Royal Air Force under the designation F-4J(UK). It was part of a batch of ex US Navy F-4J’s purchased in 1984 by the Royal Air Force to replace aircraft sent to the Falklands to defend the Islands after the War with Argentina.

After retirement in 1991 it was flown to Duxford where it was refurbished in the colours of VF74 which it wore in 1972.
