Artist's Description

Elephants from The Elephant Orphanage, Kandy, Sri Lanka.

They were being washed in the river at the time.
The orphanage is home to about 60 elephants, all abandoned. The keepers will keep them till they die, as they cannot be released unless they take them into the game reserves on the plains, which means they won’t have a herd. But the life they lead is very good, and I think my visit- and this photograph- show that.

Actually, the only depressing thing about the trip was the fact that a guy standing near by had a camera lens a couple of feet long. Pretty stunning.
Mine didn’t come close.

I’m afraid I have no idea if the orphanage itself has a website, and the only things I could find were travel guides and things like that. So I would encourage donations but I don’t know who you would give them to. When I went we gave a donation as well as the small charge to see the elephants bathing (this is what is meant to cover the keepers, and feed and other necessities).
