Artist's Description

Stokesay Castle is a quite remarkable survivor from a previous age, straddled by the ‘modern’ intrusions of the railway and the A49 trunk road; If, however, these two ‘young limbs’ did not exist we would never get to see this Shropshire gem. Dating back to the 13th century, Stokesay is quite simply the best remaining example of a fortified manor house. Built by Lawrence Ludlow, a wealthy wool merchant, the house combined a comfortable residence with some limited defensive capabilities. Now in the care of English Heritage. Painted on a glorious day, bitten half to death by insects!
Pen, ink wash and oil pastel/wax crayon on Bockingford NOT paper.
