About 8 miles north of Monmouth lies the village of Skenfrith. The 800 year-old church, with its heavily-buttressed tower topped by an unusual two-stage wooden dovecote, is dedicated to St Bridget. A short distance away is the low-lying 12th century castle, now in the care of the National Trust. I’ve used my artistic licence to bring church and castle slightly closer together for this painting. I’ve predominantly used blue to create a mood of mystery to the painting, plus it also contrasts well with the old red sandstone used for both buildings.
