Artist's Description

Roop Kumar Rathod hails from the ‘Aditya Gharana of Jamnagar’. He is the son of late Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod- the Dhrupad Maestro. Dhrupad is a rare and arguably the oldest form of singing. He has two brothers; music composer Shravan Rathod and singer Vinod Rathod. Roop began his career in music as a tabla player and soon became the most sought after tablists. He performed extensively with Anup Jalota as a percussionist and also played the tabla for well-known playback singers Lata Mangeshkar and Pankaj Udhas; who also sang Indian Ghazals. He played for Shyam Benegal’s ‘Discovery of India’, a television serial. Called a ‘chaumukha’ musician; singing, percussion, and composing are Roop’s core strengths. When Music India released Parwaaz, a double album of ghazals, Roop composed, sang, and played the tabla – a rare feat! Roop Kumar was introduced as a playback singer by the music directors Laxmikant – Pyarelal in the Hindi film Angaar. From then on, he has sung a number of film songs; with ‘Sandese aate hain’, from Border, being one of his greatest hits.
