Poem for a friend

My dear friend I want to know you for so much longer.
I want to see you balanced and walking a lifeline
I want to see happy and feeling fine
I want to see you cry and feel low
I want to see you recover and struggle past woe

My dear friend there is much left worth doing
I want to see you write a book and be understood
I want to see you pen a song and have a generation sing along
I want to see you find a woman whose wish is worth doing
I want to see you make a home that you can call your own

My dear friend you are and can always be a rich man
I want to see you draw strength from your friends and them from you
I want to see you value yourself and the things you can do
I want to see you revel in wealth of love and good fortune
I want to see you look back and shudder at your thoughts of abortion

My dear friend, surrender in death but do not surrender to it.
I want to see you mature and find your calling
I want to see you rising up and not falling
I want to see you rolling with the good and bad
I want to shake your hand when you’re an old man
