Cley Windmill in the 1880s
A view of the tiny port from the 1880’s, showing amongst the various dinghies, two of the lighters used at this time to allow the quays to continue trading.

Coasters from Newcastle and other northern ports would come across Blakeney Bar and anchor in “The Pit”. The lighters, with their four man crews were poled and sailed out from Cley Creek to meet them, the six mile round trip taking about 14 hours. They could carry about 45 tons and the trips normally involved taking out flour and grain and bringing back coal…As you may imagine, it was extremely hard work which carried on almost whatever the weather. The long line of horse drawn coal waggons waiting for the return of the lighters was a common sight in the 19th century, before most of this traffic was lost when the railway came to Holt in 1884.

The lighter traffic, which also included oil cake and malt going out and bones to supply a local bone manure factory coming in, continued until the early years
of this century.
