"A Wash"

10:45 P.M., no particular night of the week. Rows of commercial washing machines, lids up, various shades of almond. With the exception of an old Indian woman, I sit alone. My t-shirts and socks spin, for as long as $1.25 will let them.

Too much blank time, worthless sitting. My mind races, evaluating my position. I hate it here. It’s just so common. This is when it gets bad. The mind has ample time to re-evaluate every decision that I’ve ever made; regrets. I hate being in this capacity, so limited. I have to do something to change all this. My brain can’t take much more of this numbing monotony. There’s just to much going on for me to be sitting here comparing shades of almond. I get urges to do stupid things. I consider the old womans response, but I don’t really care. I’m really too lazy to act on them anyway. So I just play them out in my head, laugh a little to myself.

I really think that this is what hell is. Hell is a shit-hole laundrymat. Not fire and caves, but rows of mismatched washing machines, a wall of dryers, sticky floors, and a half-staticy radio playing through browning ceiling tiles. This is hell- my hell. My only consolation is the trance brought on by staring directly into the center of the spinning tube socks through the round glass door.

The indian woman passes between me and my hypnotist, I half-assed smile. She looks at me as if I’m here to sell drugs to children. Which, actually, sounds a hell of a lot better than the reality of it all. I focus on the little green digital lines that count down the time. They seem to slow as I watch. I look forward to 0:00, and the beep that accompanies it. But, it’s not like theres so much better waiting once this is done. Probably just a late-night beer and reruns of “Roseanne” on Nick-at-Night. There has got to be something else, because this reality sucks. Something has got to be different-better. I guess I’ll have plenty of time to think about it when my ass is back here next week, thinking the same thing- one load at a time.
