"In the Moment"

All I did was change lanes- and there she was. I pulled to the stoplight and made a quick glance to my left. She was looking to her right. We met eyes and made that “I acknowledge your presence” smile. I added a silly lip-curl and a blink of my left eye. She smiled again, with a look-away blush. I childishly stuck out my tongue and she laughed. I was in.
There really wasn’t too much to the whole dating thing. Somehow, it was like we were past the preliminaries. We were together for several years, making memories, before I found the security I needed to ask for her hand. She cried for at least half of an hour. We planned for months. She wanted it perfect, and it was. Every detail was bought and arranged. We were the ideal.
Three years later, there were little feet running through the living room. A beautiful little boy. And in another two, the sweet cry of our baby girl. We raised the perfect family. We went on vacations. We decorated the tree at Christmas. We visited grandparents in the fall. It was everything that any man could dare to hope for.
Side-by-side we grew old together. We watched our children grow into great parents themselves. We took care of one another, and sang to each other on the porch swing on warm summer nights. We made every possibility a reality. We were happy, and in love. We had everything. But at that moment, it happened. The light turned green, and she was gone.
