Artist's Description

These birds are part of a flock of about 1000 birds. This type sandgrouse live in the deep sand desert and once a day in mid-morning they will fly as a group to water. They wade into the water and their feathers have small cup like devices that hold water – they can use this for their chicks or for themselves later. This is the first time I have seen them here near my town — and I guess this is the most ever seen together in the country. They make a loud cooing sound when coming to the water —so the sky was full of grouse calls and flapping wings – a great sight, and a bit of a natural wonder.
