Artist's Description

Grytviken, South Georgia. An old Norwegian whaling town, most of this no longer stands, but it is still an incredibly important historic stop off if one happens to be passing by! Shackleton’s saved the Endurance crew by landing here after several gruelling months at sea in his life boat… trekked over from the other side of the island to find help – and legend has it he slid down the mountainside on his backside to end up in the grimy whale-oil slicked alleys of this remote town, all nearly 100 years ago.
This shot was taken with my old, medium format Pentax (120mm) from one of Frank Hurley’s viewpoints, though he continued up the mountain behind me with a heavy old tripod and plate camera and shot an even higher perspective on this amazing scene. He was a legendary photographer.
