Artist's Description

Sulfur, aka brimstone, besides being used for fertilizer, pesticides, fungicides, and in gunpowder, is an important element in our bodies. Sulfur-sulfur (disulfide) bonds hold the two strands of the DNA double helix together and provide strength to hair and nails. Slowly cooling the molten sulfur made these smooth crystals, the colors change along with variations in thickness of the crystals. Thickness increases from left to right. Taken at 40x magnification under polarized light microscopy.
