Artist's Description

FEATURED JAN 2010 WILDFLOWERS OF NORTH AMERICA

Taken at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, this photograph shows the many stages of life of purple coneflowers in the prime of summer, around the end of July. Captured at midday on a summer’s walk, I tried to show the varying heights , stages of life, and qualities of these majestic flowers. Taken with a small aperture, I strived to show the spatial relations of the different stalks by limiting depth of field.

A favorite in the Midwest, this species of flower is a common sight in prairies in Minnesota. Like some prairie plants, they are perennials, blooming year after year. Interestingly enough, the purple coneflower, or echinacea (many sub-varieties exist), can be used as an herbal remedy for the common cold. Different kinds of butterflies and hummingbirds flock to the plant, and the seeds provide sustenance for other birds.
