Artist's Description

In the classic Createn foundation myth, a high-born Phoenician woman, Europa, was seduced and abducted by Zeus who appeared in the form of a white bull. The scenario seems a bit less odd if you consider that the image of Europa emerged from ancient cattle goddesses,Astarte. By the 8th Century, the term “Europa” came to represent the domain of Charlemagne. By 754, we have written accounts of the term “Europenses” in reference to the Christian portion of what we know call “Europe”. In his highly sanitized Tanglewood Tales, Hawthorn describes the movement of Europa’s brothers across the continent as they searched for their missing sister. She has become a symbol of pan-European unity, and is depicted on the Greek 2-euro coin.
