I took this ‘Grumman Ag Cat Crop Dusting Biplane # N7016X” dust grass fields near the Eugene Airport in Lane County, Oregon.
The scores of biplane military trainers developed in the World War II era later turned into an unexpected windfall for the crop-dusting industry. Influenced by the design team from Texas A&M who built the first plane specifically for aerial application in 1950—the Ag-1—the Grumman Ag Cat, a biplane design with 225 horsepower radial engines, is a basic airframe that incorporates many safety innovations, including a pressurized cockpit to keep pesticides out, air conditioning and a fuselage that will progressively collapse in the event of a crash.
