Artist's Description

Oddly, this was taken in Elk Garden, Va. in Russell Co. on a little knoll in the Appalachian Mountains. Since I was a little girl I was fascinated with this old falling down structure. …Mostly, because this is just not the type of structure you would commonly see in the mountains of SW Virginia. I’m not sure what it was used for initially. It sits very close to a huge Greek looking mansion, I believe once belonged to A large family that, years and years ago, owned most of the cattle land in the area. I’m wondering if this was once part of the Stewart Land and Cattle Company of Russell Co. This is my uneducated guess!
Some of the trees shown are coming from the inside. Currently, I believe this land is used for cattle and the trees are kept cleared around the outside of the building. I also feel that the cross shapes of the windows/doors may be pure coincidental and were possibly formed by “father time”. And I have often wondered what type of roof it had. I plan on climbing the fence and getting some closer shots. One day, when I have more time, I may look into it’s history. Very mysterious.
