Artist's Description

FEATURED in Neighbours – The Aussies and the Kiwis 24-08-2012

Camera: Canon EOS 400D, Lens: @ 17mm, ISO: 100, Aperture: f8. Shutter: 1/125

This view was taken from Crown Peak in the Otago Region of the South Island of New Zealand, looking out towards that Remarkables and Lake Wanaka. This pass, the Crown Range Summit reaches 1076 metres above sea level and is the highest sealed road in New Zealand. Europeans first crossed this pass in 1860 searching for sheep pasture and in 1861, Alfred Duncan drove the first sheep to Rees Run at Wakatipu, then moved up the Cardrona Valley and over this pass. Then in early 1863, hundreds of gold seekers used this route to the Arrow and Skippers diggings. The first tourist trips using horse drawn coaches drove over the pass in 1877, but it wasn’t until the year 200 that the road was finally sealed and it is now a major tourist route.
