The steep and narrow Advocate’s Close runs from the Royal Mile down to Cockburn Street in Ediburgh. The Royal Mile was once the main street in Edinburgh and is packed with closes (narrow paths) running off it’s sides. Most of the closes are quite narrow and are separated the very tall houses. In Edinburgh’s early history they were busy thoroughfares where people walked, depositied their house waste to, sold produce and moved cattle. Advocate’s Close is believed to date from 1544. John Scougall, painter to William III and Queen Mary, was an early resident here, as was Bishop Bothwell (Abbot of Holyrood House 1570). The close takes its name from Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, the last Advocate of Scotland in office during the time of the Restoration, Revolution and Union.
