Artist's Description

The nodding greenhood orchid is quite common, if a little hard to find. The flower is basically a trap for mosquitoes, the labellum when sprung closes and forces the insect to exit past the pollinia. You can see the yellow pollen through the translucent sides of the orchid, this one flowers in late winter- spring. The species is Pterostylis nutans .This was taken with a Canon AE-1P and 200mm f4 macro lens on Provia 100F.
