Artist's Description

A small pride of lions came to the water hole at 1:30 in the morning in the harsh Etosha National Park, Namibia. The lioness’ came down to drink while the male stayed back and watched. 15min later another small pride came to drink and the males had to sort out who was boss. It was amazing and exhilarating to watch these two massive beasts launch at each other. Unfortunately at ~100m away my flash struggled to capture it and took quite a while to warm up again after the initial burst on maximum power. At only 50m away though it didn’t require much power at all to light up the eyes of these thirsty girls.

The lion is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list. The main threats to lions are indiscriminate killing (primarily as a result of retaliatory or pre-emptive killing to protect life and livestock) and prey base depletion. Habitat loss and conversion has led to a number of populations becoming small and isolated (Bauer 2008).
