Lovely Shape

In Vulcan’s realm I bend the steel
Moulding to both shape & feel
Partnered beasts of horse & man
As woman does what women can

Steel in my body fire in my soul
Work on the anvil, fire from the coal
With leather draped I can begin
No cloth sits upon my skin

Dependency from long ago
Who serves whom? We’ll never know
Sculptured bodies for work & show
We work, we ride & on we go

Artist's Description

A forge according to the Romans was Vulcan’s realm. The relationship between humans & horses is ancient & the power & heat involved in shoeing a horse invokes a primitive directness. It is no place for whimps & cloth provides little protection.
But who is on show here, the human, the horse or both?
