A Get-Well Note

I will sooth your rasping tortured throat.
with lemon and honey in rich warm butter.
A small sweet grace to ease the fractious crash
of your breaking voice.
I want to kiss you while breathing in
to take your flaking faltering breath away
and rest it with a low quiet lull
as if sleeping.
I would fold around you
like a blanket of comfort
against the shivering ague.
I would I bring you chicken broth
and idle at you feet
until the final frays of sickness mend.

So I sit here
with the instruments of breakfast,
the spoon and cup and bowl,
and I stumble in my praise of day
to think you may be wretched
in the tumble of your torture.
Are you aching from the long fever
with a listless weakness in your limbs,
exhausted drained and depleted
on the edge of denied sleep?
Or are you in the aftermath
wanting to be well and so eager
yet flummoxed by the idle pace of recovery?
I wish that you were hale and hearty
with all the trammels of ill health
cast carelessly away.
I want your day to flare up inside you
with all the Christmas excitement of children.

I will picture you well again
with our hands clasped
and footsteps quick with excitement
as we plunge into the wide green world.
