Clifton Springs is a little coastal town located on the Bellarine Peninsula, near Geelong, only a hop, skip and a jump from Queenscliff, with its summer holiday makers and ferry riders.

I’ve spent several dawns and sunsets there at the tail end of one trip or another since it’s not far from home for me and makes a good spot to crash for the night. In all those visits two things have become apparent.

Firstly the old pier is an oft photographed subject, meaning that it’s likely other keen photographers will arrive and want the one spot from which “the shot” (which requires wading out a bit in the freezing water) can be taken, so it pays to be first on scene.

Secondly, the pier faces neither the rising nor setting sun so dramatic light is unlikely, but there is lot to be said for understated simplicity. I like the way the slow shutter speed has evened out the already gentle waves and blurred the clouds, really focused ones attention on the pier itself and the endless nature of ocean.

For anyone who prints this large enough they’ll see that a few seagulls adorn the farthest posts.
