This image is really nostalgic for me. When I was growing up in Los Angeles, I would see these red behemoths roar by with passengers or freight. Being kids, we did indeed put our pennies on the track and marveled at how flat they were after the train past over them. I also remember reading the Super Chief ads in the newspapers or magazines with their promise of smooth, efficient travel by rail. And what boy didn't covet his own Lionel electric train set?
