Artist's Description

James Hyatt decided not to let another parade pass him by.
As the last unit of the Waynesville, NC Memorial Day Parade rolled by, he grabbed his portable oxygen tank and joined the parade. He marched the entire route, saluted the crowd, and greeted many well-wishers along the way.
There wasn’t a dry eye on Main Street.

I was fortunate enough to meet him and learn that he had landed at Omaha Beach with the signal corps several days after the initial invasion. Like my father, he served in Patton’s 3rd Army all across Europe and finally in the Battle of the Bulge.

In June, just a few weeks after this parade, he passed away.
