Eyes on the prize

Small pleasures, a guilty heart cant bear
Cups of peppermint tea lying idle in the heat
This summer has brought long days I wont forget
A chasm as big as the earth itself has opened
Between the then and now I occupy
The space is wide and filled with sighs
Blue eyes and slight curves of the lip of his
And hands that held my hair out of the sand while
He was gentle and laid me backwards in a blue dress
It sparkled under his gaze, the moon …a million stars.
The now is me …no fuzz of wine and cigarettes
Just cold hard clarity and a tiny swell in my belly
As he or she grows, little peanut to tadpole to human form
And I am left with the cold stare not of a lover
But of a husband who sees the unbrushed hair
Dimples in thighs, or does he? This could be me
Harsh and critical with my disobedient heart
Projecting my turmoil onto myself, punish, punish
Sometimes at night his eyes are soft, sipping scotch
Watching sport, his small pleasures
With my legs draped over his lap, my skin like soft toast.
