Artist's Description

The first thing I do when I see this picture is chuckle at the story Mom tells about this Christmas. I guess that’s why she took this picture. If you look to the left of the tree, you’ll see a punching bag head. This is Brutus from the Popeye cartoon for those of you who remember that. I was four years old in ‘60 so my brother would have been 7 years old. After daddy set up the punching bag (which in those days was really a punching head on a metal-type stick), he could not resist the temptation to give a try. When he did, the stick broke in two. What do you do on Christmas Eve when you’ve just broken your son’s toy? Well, he carefully balanced the top part on the bottom part and left it that way. The next morning, when my brother gave it a good punch, the top part goes flying off. My Dad says, “Ohhhh, you brooooke it.” I can just imagine my parents trying not to laugh; though, in truth, it was probably more my FATHER trying not to laugh, LOL. The second thing I see are the gifts I asked Santa for: a stove, a doll, and an ironing “yetter.” (I think Dad is sitting in front of the doll.) Evidently, if I did not know the word for something, I called it a “yetter.” Every year, and I DO mean every year (until I was 14 when my father passed away), they would ask, “and what do you want, Karen? A stove, doll, and ironing yetter?” They evidently got a lot of joy out of this, lol. Isn’t that what is so wonderful about photography. They hold memories and they tell stories and take one back to a period of time. Ya gotta love that. Merry Christmas! :) Karen
