Artist's Description

Overlooking the Gulf of Mexico on Florida’s panhandle coast, on the southernmost point of land in the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, this lighthouse has been in more-or-less continuous operation for 180 years. The light is fully automated now. The former keeper’s house is being restored, and is open to the public on a limited basis. The area has been important to seafarers since the 17th century, when the Spanish built a fortified settlement nearby at what is now the San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park. You can see a Spanish influence in the keeper’s building. The remnants of the old fort can be visited today.
