Artist's Description

A few years ago it became very popular (especially with young teens) to collect and display masquerade masks.

Around this time I was commissioned to make a “phantom of the opera” mask. I asked the client which one there are more than one style that has been used for this famous performance. He said he did not know it was a Christmas present for him mother. I made two and let him chose, which he preferred (the second mask was snapped up quickly after he had his first pick).

I asked my second oldest daughter the gruelling task of lying on her back while I sculpted the mask on her face. Using her lovely face as a base. She at this time had already procured several small masquerade masks and had her own private collection. So in gratitude for her discomfort of having not one but two “phantom of the opera” masks made on her face, I made her a mask of her own. It became the centrepiece of her small collection. I’m not sure if she liked it best or if it was because it was made by Mum and life size of her own face.
