Artist's Description

This prickly poppy or Chicalote (Argemone munita) is just one of the delightful flowers I photographed during the recent open house at Prisk Native Garden (Long Beach, CA), a small garden devoted to the richness of California native flora. This member of the Papaveraceae family is characterized by the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers & Native Plants as a deciduous, short-lived perennial that is best treated as an annual. The plants are three to four feet high with spiny leaves and buds, drought-tolerant, cold hardy to 15 degrees Fahrenheit, and they bloom in spring and summer. Their natural habitat is in open areas, and they are especially common after fire. (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 50mm macro, f/8, 1/1250 sec, ISO 200, afternoon sun, handheld)
