Artist's Description

Highly acclaimed and much-loved Australian children’s author/illustrator Bob Graham created this delightful poster for the 1992 theme ‘Windows into Worlds’ to celebrate Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Children’s Book Week.

Bob, a Kate Greenaway medal winner, has been awarded the CBCA Picture Book of the Year an unprecedented seven times, most recently for his picture book Home in the Rain (2017).

His books are recognisable for their gentle narratives focussing on family, community, a love of animals, and the simple comforts of domestic life.

During his Kate Greenaway medal acceptance speech, Bob said:

“A little girl once asked me at a book talk at Cheltenham, ‘Bob Graham,’ she said, ‘why do you read books?’ It set me back a peg I can tell you, and sweat broke out on my palms. After some nervous shuffling and throat clearing I answered, ‘To imagine for just a moment what it might be like to be someone else – to live somewhere else, or to look out of someone else’s eyes, even a dog’s, or a pig in a waistcoat, or a duck in a truck.’ It seems to me that here at such an early age, in children’s books, we should be celebrating differences as well as cosy home grown certainties.”

Bob’s books include: A Bus Called Heaven, How to Heal a Broken Wing, Silver Buttons, Vanilla Icecream, Rose Meets Mr Wintergarten, Max, Jethro Byrde: Fairy Child, Home in the Rain, Greetings from Sandy Beach and the latest title The Poesy Ring.
