Artist's Description

French pilot and photographer Justine Usse, with Air Wings and Croix de Guerre, in front of his Sopwith Camel ‘Marcelle’, c. 1917. The story of Usse is very similar to the average WWI pilot career: he first enlisted as an infantryman, was wounded after a mine explosion and, unable to return into the battlefield, was drafted into the aviation after 25 hours of flight.
