Idolization in today's world.

In today’s world everyone wants to be famous, it is thrust in our faces at a very young age to aspire to be a movie star, a rockstar, to be rich and famous.

The media teaches us who to idolize, they glamorize the lifestyles of all sorts of celebrities making us average people feel inferior and giving us unreachable goals to waste our life away trying to reach.

I live in Melbourne Australia where there is a large criminal element embedded into our city and surrounding areas. These crime families have infested our businesses and institutions with corruption, but instead of trying our best to put a stop to it the media have released a mini-series on the underground crime syndicate.

What benefit could this possibly have on our culture and society? Are we so twisted in our way of thinking that we don’t see how glamorizing crime will entice the youth to follow trend?

The youth already idolize celebrities, and these celebrities are mostly nothing but spoilt, drunk, self-obsessed brainwashed sheep that strive for nothing in this world except material things. From sport to television we have an array of useless idols that encourage children to become useless adults who will inevitably contribute nothing to the progress of our society.

Children should be idolizing the progress-makers, the scientists and specialists, and wishing to become the next movers and shakers of our country. But unfortunately what we have been programmed to believe is “cool” will be the only thing everyone will be focusing on, our sons will prefer to be the next football hero rather than cure cancer and our daughters would rather date the next football hero than cure cancer.

When problems of war and politics arise on the news it is always followed by celebrity news, what dress J-Lo wore on the red carpet, who is divorcing who, who won the Grand Final, etc. By the time the news is over no one can remember the important stuff, the media is telling us that the lives of celebrities are more important than our own lives. We are too busy mimicking rockstars to notice our politicians slashing our rights from under us and laying down more taxes, increasing interest rates, we have been duped into thinking that we will be famous and that will somehow solve all of our problems.

Idolization in today’s world has gotten out of hand we need only look at the characters that are being idolized to see that.
My hope is that we will become more aware of the effects that glamorizing and idolizing of celebrities and criminals is having on our culture and re-educate our children so that this stupidity finally comes to an end.
