Sugar Hill

I hear the people crying
From here to Sugar Hill
They’ve set their world ablaze
While I was asleep
And dreaming of the kinder days
I spent in the sugar

People scream for angels
In a landslide of tears
And they’re falling into the fields
Where the demons lay waiting
Bit by bit, they tear it apart
Their claws rip into the sides
‘Pray to God’, they whisper
And let the blood flow
Let the blood flow down

They break windows overnight
Blow apart the faces they used to know
Some example they are setting
For the children grow faster
And the old cease to matter
Each drop falls on the streets
The streets on fire, the streets of stone
The streets they once knew

And I still dream of the sugar
How it tasted in the past
Each crystal like snow, sweet and soft
I remember the grain on my tongue
How it dissolved on the way down
Oh, what else can I remember
To save my skin and soul?
Can anything save me from a bleeding end?
I want the kinder days I spent
To end without a drop shed

Bit by bit, they tear it apart
Their claws rip into the sides
‘Pray to God’, they whisper
And let the blood flow
Let the blood flow down
Let the blood flow down before drying
And let it settle once and for all
At the foot of Sugar Hill
