Artist's Description

Amongst the remnants of the B&B Complex Forest Fire that burned 90,769 acres over 39 days in 2003 the “Scarlet or Common Paint Brush” grows atop a foothill near Hoodoo Ski Area along Hwy 20 Santiam Pass, Oregon Taken July 6, 2011 at approximately 5,000 foot elevation.

Common paintbrush is an attractive perennial wildflower with several stems from 20-80 cm high The leaves alternate on the stems. As with other paintbrushes, it is a root parasite that extracts water and organic nutrients from its hosts.

The calyx and bracts are a bright scarlet or bright red (occasionally yellow) while the corolla are greenish.

Habitat:
Common paintbrush may be found in meadows and in open woods from low to moderate elevation in the mountains.
