In My Twilight Years
Written by CarolM

In the twilight years of my life
I will humbly accept my strife

I’ll protect the pride
As long as I have a breath inside

The younger males are so spirited and strong
But I must stand up
Or loose what I have fought for
For so long

I know my days are numbered
But I must go with honor
I cannot hold on much longer

My simple prayer
Is that my fate be swift and final
And that I be known for my strength
And pride and regal existence

My life has been long
And filled with rewards

In my last hours, I pray for peace
And the freedom to roam, in my heaven
Where I can roar again
With the strength of the fierce lion
I once was

This very old lion in captivity, seemed a bit weak and frail. He inspired me to write this poem. I felt a sadness in his eyes.
