Artist's Description

Emperor Penguin, Aptenodytes forsteri. The parent bird, having just returned from a 2-3 week fishing trip, finds its chick in the rookery and regurgitates food for it. Seen on the fast ice of Terra Nova Bay in a colony which is about 300,000 strong at Cape Washington, Ross Sea, Antarctica. Emperor Penguins are the largest penguins reaching 122 cm (48 in) in height and weighing anywhere from 22 to 45 kg (49 to 99 lb). Emperor penguins are not listed as endangered as population counts have indicated that this species is stable. However, there are still concerns that human disturbance may result in declines in breeding populations and that global warming may impact the sea ice and threaten breeding locations.
