Artist's Description

Australian Pelican, Pelecanus conspicillatus, with its head tucked in preparing to sleep.
Photographed at the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Pelicans are wide spread and have adapted to human habitation. They are likely to gather where fisher people bring in their catch. They are opportunists in this situation looking for throw away pieces of fish. It has been recorded as having the longest bill of any living bird.
Pelicans became famous after one starred (well actually 3 different ones played the part of Mr Percival) in the 1976 film “Storm Boy” based on the 1966 children’s book by Colin Thiele.
Canon 6D, zoom lens.
