Artist's Description

Leopard – Panthera Pardus

One of my very early digital shots;
Done in 2002, I had an Olympus 2.5MP
(now my cellphone has got more!)

I was so lucky to catch her – she
jumped on the tree…posed for a
few seconds in the late afternoon
sun.. than jumped off again to
disappear….

While leopards are in the “critical”
list in many part of Africa, in South Africa
the leopard population is considered healty
and is not uncommon to spot a leopard
in the Kruger Nat. Park – and particularly often
in the adjoining Conservancy of the
Sabi Sand, due to its ideal riverine habitat
leopards seem to prefer.

Leopards are shy, cunning and dangerous,
especially when wounded.

Leopards are very good tree climbers
and can pull large prey up a tree to
protect it from other predators or
scavengers in the vicinity.
They return later to feed again.
Leopards still occur outside conservation areas.
