Artist's Description

Every Good Boy Deserves Fun by Cara Schingeck, mixed media found object wall sculpture made with:
xylophone keys (E, G, B, D, F); whiskey barrel band, wire, various tools, green glass, copper pipe

I used found objects that were meaningful to me because they were objects tools that came from two wonderful gentlemen-one is my father and the other was my father’s friend-his next door neighbor, Gus.

Both worked hard, served their country, and are faithful to their values, their families, and are two men that I know did the best they could to care for and ensure that their children knew core values and knew the value of an honest days work.

A tribute for my family to let them Know that I am thinking of you always, We all deserve fun hang in there

Both men knew the importance of doing what one can do for their neighbor…to do for anyone in need.

I created this wall sculpture shortly after my father’s friend, Gus, passed away. Gus lived alone next door to my parents and my father checked on him daily because that is my father and because Gus was far into his nineties…yet, if you had met Gus you would think he was ageless.

Gus was a man who never took a day for granted in his life. He was also a sculptor. He is the artist who created the sculpture in Seattle, Washington that is found as you drive across what locals call the “520 bridge”…Gus’s sculpture is a public art installation which is located along the drive across Lake Washington along the bridge-way as you go from downtown Seattle to the East side of King county.

His sculpture is directly across from the University of Washington installed permanently in the waters of Lake Washington.

This humble man living next door to another humble man and artist, my father, never spoke of his great achievement as an artist. We never knew of his legacy as an artist until his death and his family flew into town. They gave to my father, who found him lying on the floor of his bedroom (my father as I said checked on Gus)…I asked my father to share with me what his experience was that morning…he said that he knew Gus always woke early so when he didn’t see him up and about like usual he used the key that Gus had given him, walked in the home, calling out a good morning welcome, no answer, and found Gus laying on the floor next to his bed.

I said to my father, “oh, dad…I’m sorry…I know you cared so much for him, how did you feel when you found him?…what is it for you to be there, dad?”

He said that the first words out of his mouth were…“oh, Gus….” he said that he knew that Gus was so strong and that he never gave up, he never ever wanted to stop living his life…he realized that Gus always understood that life, every day was a gift and that he never ever took for granted that gift.

So, Every Good Boy Deserves Fun is my tribute to all people who understand that life is meant to be lived to the fullest and my tribute to two men who I know that this is true, to live, to love, to always appreciate each day and to give to others and always know that no matter how difficult it may be to get out of bed the point is to use every ounce of energy to get out of bed because even that experience is a journey.

Thank you Gus for setting such a great example and for giving your gift to my father and for his gift of giving to me-your tools which I cherish and make this tribute in honor of life and living and of the tones and music of life made of all types of found objects which I know your strong hands have touched.

H, remember when you went to my exhibit at Gallery Madera where I showed this work of art?
I am looking forward to you coming to more shows soon…always fun…you have always been so supportive. Thank you, C
