Artist's Description

Let me introduce you too my slightly shy, snoozing friend ‘Honey’.

This image belongs to my latest series up close and personal

Honey is a brown bear and has been with the melbourne zoo since 1987 and up until a couple of years ago resided with Roan. Roan passed in 2010 due to a problem with his spine…

Honey is now the only brown bear at the zoo my hope is that some day soon they may find a companion for her to spend the rest of her days..

As much as many people (including myself) can often see the zoo as a sad place to visit please remember that the zoologists that work in these places are trying to save the animal species of the world and need all of the support they can get.

In the wild these animals are generally solitary, except for mothers with cubs. They are omnivorous, eating both plant and animal material. They can eat up to 15kg of food a day.
Their large bodies are covered in thick fur. A prominent shoulder hump consists of muscle that powers their digging skills. Long non-retractable claws on their front paws can reach about 5 cm in length.
Brown Bears can run at speeds of up to 50km per hour, but for short bursts only.
Brown Bears do not undergo a true hibernation, but they do go through a period of lethargy. They build up layers of fat through summer and autumn that help sustain them through winter.
