Seven Sturdy Beasts

Seven sturdy beasts
Were tugging at a chain,
When out from in the driver’s sin
The whip came down again.
The whip came down again.
Nostrils flared and eyes
Rolled white and wild for fright;
Broad backs, bent bows, loosed sweat that rose
Like wraiths beneath the night;
Like wraiths beneath the night.
Tear, uproot this soil!
Why leave life to decay?
If death remain a fatal rain
To rule our harden’d way,
T’would harm our cause to stay.
Live! Till all these fields –
Make regular their mien –
The softer blade this ground has flayed
Be sure to aft’ward clean –
Be sure to aft’ward clean.
Flesh that ripples cold
As lunacy’s contempt,
Reflections, ruminations, doom:
Though aiming naught, can tempt;
Though acting not, will tempt;

No living man’s exempt.
