Post-Solstice

The late-day sun

casts long shadows on the porch

I watch, amused

as my puppy bounds lopsidedly.

Little mushrooms grow in the grass

and catch the last rays of the sun

The cold creeps in

and finds it’s way to my toes.

And as my electric fire fails again

I curse,

gather my little tri-coloured lap-rug

and it falls asleep with such serenity

that I can’t help but smile

and think that the days can only get longer.
