Artist's Description

Try Bismuth.

~ from the Periodic Table of Elements:

Symbol: Bi
Atomic Number: 83
Atomic Weight: 208.98037
Element Classification: Other Metal
Discovered By: Known to the ancients.
Name Origin: German: bisemutum, (white mass), Now spelled wismut.

Bismuth is a natural antacid, and is the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol.

Crystals like the one shown do not occur in nature, but are created in laboratories by super-cooling molten bismuth in a special atmosphere. It melts at 520ºF. The rainbow colors are achieved by using high-grade bismuth of extreme (99.99%) purity. If not so pure, the only colors displayed are blue & purple. The unusually shaped crystals are called pseudocubic hopper crystals.

The crystals are rather heavy for their size. Bismuth is semi-noble, or nearly inert (unaffected by most acids and/or gasses).

As a reference, the longest side of the largest “hopper” in this image measures about 7mm (1/4") in length.
