Artist's Description

Acrylics on canvas

you ever look at a picture of life from over a hundred years ago, say a painting like this one called ‘the potato eaters’ by Van Gogh. I was informed by the books to look on these potato eaters with pity because of their impoverished lifestyle.

Compared though, with the home-eating experience of today., they are already greatly blessed by the absence of the television. These people actually face one another and engage in conversation instead of drifting off into the open-mouthed worship of the holy screen.
As I painted my own version of this mealtime image, i realised in todays family unfriendly state, we may not sit together for home-dinners anyway. No we are herded into huge childish barns to eat the delicious meals promised by the television. Of course there’s money to be made in this industry, the price of this food is a hundred times its actual value . Time is money, every eater, a paying customer, we are goaded keenly by our handlers , uniformed burger-bots arrange us in queues, most of us are well trained at this, with perfect complicity we shuffle like hungry robots across the shiny tiles. Then we are stopped by the big counter, it’s high enough to stop us shuffling straight into the deep friers, but low enough to allow us easy access to our money. What we slaved, cursed and sweated for all month, we just throw away as soon as our legs hit a counter, its some piece of programming.
From the other side of the counter comes synthetic foodstuffs in a flash its wrapped in poly-paper and launched into a bag like old socks in a bin. Quickly we are rushed to the next stage while clutching our hot prize. Even a dog would shake its head at this style of feeding

I was going to include an imagined quote here from one of those past peasants looking into the future to see the modern meals. But really I couldnt bring myself to traumatize the guy with the sight of a mad ginger golliwog tickling his pasty square-eyed descendants while they suck chemicals through a straw.
